2 TODAY S GOSPEL: Luke 9:44-50 "Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men." But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child and put him by his side, and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great." John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us." But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you." ALTAR FLOWERS The floral arrangements adorning the altar today were presented by Rose Samarian in memory of Haig and Varsanek Samarian, Sarkis Samarian and Melek Samarian. GIFTS TO THE CHURCH A gift was presented by Almas Derderian in appreciation for receiving the St. John the Forerunner Award and for all the good wishes from family and friends on this occasion. In honor of good friend Almas Derderian for her years of dedication to our beloved St. John Armenian Church, a gift is presented by Lillian Kojamanian. A gift is presented by Lucille Belbeisi and family in loving memory of son and brother Nadeem Belbeisi, who will be missed at Thanksgiving. The service is under the auspices of Lift up Southfield clergy association of which St. John Armenian Church is a part. The service will begin at 7:00 pm at St. David s with the participation of eight Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and Muslim faith communities. Our Komitas Choir will join the composite choir from all the participating congregations to lead the singing of hymns. It is an opportunity to come together as people of faith to thank one God for all our blessings on our national holiday of Thanksgiving. Following worship there will be a coffee fellowship hour. 5 WHAT IS ADVENT? Advent means coming. It is the season of the church year where we prepare ourselves for the coming of the Messiah. Advent means coming in three different senses: HISTORY The coming of the Messiah in the flesh, to be celebrated at Christmas. Christ came in history so we might have a new life in him and be heirs to his Father s kingdom. MYSTERY The coming of Christ in Word and Spirit is part of the mystery of our faith and is to be pondered throughout the church year. We believe that Jesus comes to each of us personally. He does this in the sacrament of Holy Eucharist. He calls us to respond and to help Him in his work. It is up to us to listen to His call and go preach the good News. Just as the star of Bethlehem called the shepherds in the fields to lead them to Jesus, we too are called through the church to follow Him. MAJESTY The coming of Christ in glory at the end of time. How we respond to Jesus now in our everyday lives is part of our preparation for the final coming at the end of the world. During the Advent season, we take time to think about the many ways Jesus comes to us in our lives today. He comes to us in the sacraments, reading of Holy Scripture, prayer, the Church, in those who guide us in His name and in our conscience. Let us open ourselves to His call and invite Jesus to dwell within our hearts and souls. WHEN DOES ADVENT BEGIN? The Armenian Church, along with other Eastern Churches, observes Advent for a period of 50 days; in Armenian, this period is called HEESNAG. Advent always has six Sundays. This year Advent begins on November 25, which is the sixth Sunday preceding January 6, the Feast of the Nativity. The season of Advent dates back to the 4 th century. At the beginning of the 7 th century the Western Churches limited the Advent season to four weeks, celebrating the Nativity on December 25. That is why we will see some Advent wreaths with four candles rather than the traditional six -candle wreath. The Armenian Church and some other Eastern Churches are faithful to the old tradition of Christianity. We continue to celebrate Christmas (the Birth of Christ) and the Baptism of Jesus on the same day January 6.
